Carbon management is becoming increasingly important. After all, businesses have significant carbon emissions impact and a key role to reduce emissions to help meet the government’s Net Zero target by 2050.
There are six key reasons why it makes sense for SMEs to manage their carbon:
1. It helps reduce operational costs.
2. It improves energy efficiency.
3. It reduces waste.
4. It signals to customers that they’re a business that cares.
5. It helps to comply with environmental legislation.
6. It improves competitiveness including through the tendering process.
It’s a complex area and there is SO much to learn – including on the appropriate terminology! Do you undertake carbon accounting? Do you know the difference between Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, and how to measure and manage them? Have you closed the accuracy gap within your business?
Our one-day Carbon Management in Business workshop will provide a deep learning experience, giving you the skills and resources needed to reduce carbon use in your business. The workshop is delivered by academics and sustainability experts from NTU’s Nottingham Business School who will share their practice-based expertise and knowledge.
The workshop is split into four sessions:
• Introduction to Carbon Management and the Business Case
• Carbon Footprinting (Carbon Accounting)
• Strategic Action Planning
• Communication and Reporting
We’ll show you how to: seize opportunities to reduce your carbon emissions; calculate your baseline (the moment in time from which you want to start measuring your carbon usage); identify appropriate data from sources such as your gas and electricity bills and convert them to greenhouse gas stats; create a Decarbonisation Plan and strategy for implementation; and communicate on your carbon management performance and reporting.

This workshop programme is suitable for managers and staff who would like to understand carbon management, measure their carbon footprint and develop a Decarbonisation Plan for their business.

• Carbon footprinting (carbon accounting)
• Creating a Decarbonisation Plan and strategy for implementation

Dr Rose Deakin is the Carbon Management Consultant at Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University with over 20 years of experience working within the field of Sustainability. They have a PhD from Loughborough University which focussed on businesses in the UK to understand the drivers and barriers to sustainable material selection in mass manufactured product design. Rose has a BA (hons) in Industrial Design and Technology, giving them a good understanding of product design and manufacturing. Rose is an experienced lecturer and workshop facilitator, having worked with both businesses and University Students. Rose is the founder of The Crop Club CIC, an Award-Winning Social Enterprise that helps people grow food in small spaces and is wholly built around sustainability.
