Overview

Why the post exists

Are you a senior events manager with proven leadership skills and a hands-on approach? Do you have experience in planning, developing and delivering successful events for the business community? If so, you could be our next Head of Commercial Events.

In this role you are key to ensuring the success of our flagship Commercial Events Programme. Operating as the driving force behind the Chamber business awards, celebration dinners, and other key events, you will shape and execute a programme that not only achieves financially but elevates our reputation for excellence.

As the lead, you will establish quality and innovation throughout the programme, adapting to market conditions and attendee feedback to create experiences that captivate and inspire. Your leadership will make certain that the programme is dynamic, relevant, and aligned with the needs and expectations of our business community.

Overview

Key areas of responsibility

  • Lead the design, development, and delivery of the Chamber’s Commercial Events Programme, including flagship events such as the Business Awards, Enterprising Women Awards, Annual Dinner, and Christmas Lunch.
  • Oversee event budgets, ensuring financial targets and ticket sales are achieved or exceeded.
  • Collaborate with teams across the Chamber to maximise engagement, develop sponsorship opportunities, and align the events calendar to avoid conflicts.
  • Work closely with the Marketing team to execute comprehensive promotional plans.
  • Manage the Commercial Events department budget, including event-specific budgets and supplier invoices.
  • Contribute to the senior management team including delivery of key objectives from the Business Plan.
  • Ensure high-quality, innovative events that meet attendee needs and market expectations.
  • Support the delivery of events such as Enterprising Women and the President’s Dinner.
  • Assist the Sales and Marketing Director with ad-hoc commercial event opportunities.

  • Relevant professional qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to transport for business purposes.

Working patterns must:

  • Be the same working times each day to create consistency for customers
  • Operate within 8.30am and 5.30pm, Monday to Friday (including an unpaid break each day) to ensure that peak contact hours are maximised
  • Feature 3 to 5 days per week to create coverage for the team

If you’re successful at this stage, you will be invited for an interview. If you’re unsuccessful, the Chamber’s HR team will let you know by email.

First, you’ll be invited to interview onsite at the Chesterfield office on 10 or 11 February 2025. If your interview goes well, you may invited to attend a second interview or offered the role. Some interviews might require you to compile some research or to prepare a presentation. At the end of the interview, the interviewer will confirm the timeline for next steps.

Interviews usually last around an hour with a mix of competency based interview questions, and in some cases, we might ask you to carry out some practical exercises.

Decisions will be made at each stage of the process, as we score applicants against the role criteria. If you’re successful, we will contact you to make an offer. This will be followed up in writing and a contract will be sent to you once a start date is confirmed. You will receive information on your induction and what you will do on your first day.
